  • This is a great free app for beginning readers. https://www.educents.com/ukloo-early-reader-app1.html

  • We use YouTube and the public library. On YouTube - just to name a handful of things - we listen to classical music, watch videos about how things are made or videos about interesting animals, and learn words and songs in foreign languages. At the library, we've checked out CDs, DVDs, and books, and we've enjoyed free activities like "mad science" shows and ukulele workshops.

  • Free Homeschool Deals is a great place to start. I also have a lot of links to sites full of free educational material at my website, Character Building for Families -- Our Favorite Links.

  • We like to use various sites, including Educents. We also shop at Goodwill for inexpensive books and resources that we can donate to the local library or Home School Chapter when we finish with them. We buy from Usborne books and discards at our local library. We also use UTube, internet for research and shows like Wild Krats, which our little one loves and is learning so much about animals from.

Cathy Hall yes! :) Wild Kratts has so many fascinating facts, and they're presented in such an engaging way. There was one episode in which they explained the differences between two kinds of armadillos. My daughter remembered that information and then told me that an armadillo in a rainforest picture must be a [certain species] - and she was right! I had no idea there were armadillos in the rainforest! I had always thought of armadillos as Texas wildlife.

Cathy Hall I'm not sure exactly which episode it's in. There are several rainforest episodes. :)

  • Vocabulary.com and khanacademy.org are my two favorite free resources. My students have developed phenomenal verbal skills from using vocabulary.com . Khan Academy has always been a favorite for online learning of essential comprehensive course offerings at every level of learning from K-12 education as well as college prep exams in affiliation with CollegeBoard.org . I am amazed how many homeschooling parents don't even know about these two fantastic resources!
