  • I do the core subjects and then let my 4th grader decide what other subjects he wants to take.

  • Choosing subjects is an interesting question! Math, Reading, Spelling, Science, and History are all subjects that can and should be taught, but how you teach them. . . ahhh that is part of the journey!

Each of my kids was different, therefore I had to adjust based on each one's individual needs. Two has learning disabilities, to that created extra opportunities to develop my skills as a teacher. We picked some materials that simply did not work, others that worked okay... and some that fit our families needs well.

One thing that was very helpful was to see what they were interested in and help them pursue it. If they like reading, then read! If they like math or science, then do that! Learning is much more fun when everyone is interested.

  • I like the Charlotte Mason method, which includes LOTS of subjects. In addition to core subjects, there are subjects like nature study, foreign languages, music (piano, folk songs, hymns, composer study/music appreciation), art (drawing, picture study/art appreciation), etc.
