  • My pediatrician helped me with this one when my first baby was weaning (before 1 2 mos).  It seems counterintuitive, but forget the sippy cup - use a glass (we used short ones the child could two-hand without getting an eyeful), fill to the TOP and demonstrate first, then hand the baby the glass and say “be careful” or “go slow.” Do the first one together.  You’ll know if your child is likely to throw it or not.  Also don’t mind if the child dumps the first few - use a cloth diaper or superabsorbent bib if this bothers you.  The key is to fill it to the top so the child can feel the drink coming as they learn a new technique.  Also, the heavier the glass the better - plastic is so easy to tip over but glass doesn’t get bumped with clumsy hands.

Heather Allen Good discription. We used a small plastic cup with only a little in it but I like your post better.
